Franchise Game of Thrones tidak pernah berhenti karena itu adalah “sapi perah” bagi HBO. Serial aslinya mungkin sudah berakhir, tetapi kini Entertainment Weekly melaporkan bahwa proses pengambilan gambar diam-diam telah dimulai untuk proyek serial prekuelnya. Menurut EW, lokasi syuting adalah tempat yang sangat familiar: Irlandia Utara, yang berfungsi sebagai pusat produksi untuk GoT selama seluruh musimnya. Belum jelas apakah prekuel juga akan mengambil gambar di negara lain juga.
S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders, Jessica Jones) akan mengarahkan episode perdana ini. Sedangkan para bintang baru yang akan menemani Naomi Watts dan Josh Whitehouse adalah Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: Episode IX), Denise Gough (Angels in America, Guerrilla), Jamie Campbell Bower (Sweeney Todd, Mortal Instruments), Sheila Atim (Harlots), Ivanno Jeremiah (Black Mirror, Humans), Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia), Alex Sharp (To the Bone), Toby Regbo (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Marquis Rodriguez (When They See Us, Saturday Church), John Simm (Strangers), Richard McCabe (Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams), John Heffernan (Dracula) serta Dixie Egerickx (The Secret Garden).
Prekuel ini akan mengambil setting beribu-ribu tahun sebelum kisah Game of Thrones dimulai dan akan meliputi kisah transisi Westeros dari Golden Age of heroes ke periode masa tergelap di dunia itu.

Belum ada pengumuman resmi tentang kapan prekuel Game of Thrones akan memulai debutnya di HBO, tetapi suatu saat di tahun 2020 tampaknya seperti waktu yang tepat.
