Ajang Golden Globe 2020 telah digelar dan penghargaan yang menandai rambu signifikan dalam perjalanan ke Oscar telah diumumkan. Mengingat jadwal singkat tahun ini, Globe merasa lebih “relevan” karena berkaitan dengan malam besar Akademi — pemungutan suara (nominasi) Oscar saat ini sedang berlangsung, sehingga pemenang/pidato malam ini dapat memiliki efek pada siapa yang dipilih.
Once Upon a Time di Hollywood mendominasi tahun ini, yang memenangkan tiga penghargaan utama seperti Best Screenplay untuk Quentin Tarantino,Best Supporting Actor untuk Brad Pitt, dan Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. Dengan demikian statusnya sebagai film pesaing utama Oscar tetap teguh.
Tetapi kejutan terbesar adalah 1917, yang tidak hanya melangkah dengan kemenangan untuk Best Motion Picture – Drama, tetapi juga Best Director, dengan Sam Mendes mengalahkan Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, dan Bong Joon-ho. Dalam kategori Drama Terbaik, film Perang Dunia I ini mengalahkan Marriage Story dan The Irishman.
Di sisi TV, HBO merajai dengan total empat kemenangan, termasuk Best Limited Series untuk Chernobyl dan Best Drama Series untuk Succession — keduanya merupakan pertunjukan yang diakui secara kritis.
