David Ayer, sutradara dari film Suicide Squad memuji penampilan Jared Leto sebagai Joker dalam film arahannya. Ayer merasa bahwa akting yang dilakukan Jared Leto sebagai Joker mampu membuat bulu kuduknya merinding. Diwawancarai oleh USA Today, Ayer mengungkapkan apresiasinya terhadap sosok Jared Leto.
“Big time. The hairs stand up on the back of your neck. If you’re a Batman fan, you have to love/hate the Joker because he’s the best nemesis ever. Just to have him on one of my film sets, it was a very memorable thing for me.”
Ayer juga menjelaskan bagaimana ia menempatkan dirinya dalam pembangunan karakter tiap peran dalam film yang ia buat.
“I love helping actors find what methodology works best for them. It’s like tailoring a suit — it’s not one size fits all. But it really made an event when he would show up on set. There was almost a pageantry to him, which did translate into the power on screen he has.”
Penampilan Joker versi Leto memang sempat menghentak para fans Joker versi Heath Ledger karena perbedaan tampilan fisiknya. Banyak fans beranggapan bahwa Joker versi Leto terlalu berlebihan, dilihat dari foto Joker Leto yang pertama kali dirilis beberapa bulan yang lalu. Tak sedikit juga fans yang khawatir akan akting Leto sebagai Joker, mengingat Ledger yang sebelumnya memerankan tokoh ini dianggap sangat sukses dan bahkan berhasil meraih piala Oscar. Sang sutradara Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder memberikan komentarnya terhadap Joker versi Leto dan bagaimana kesiapan para fans menyambutnya.
“The commitment to the role, you’re going to see that really shine through in a way that you’re not used to seeing actors in movies really go all the way with [in] every little moment and every little breath. You’re going to get taken on a journey with Jared that I don’t know that everyone’s ready for but I think it will be amazing.”
Suicide Squad dibintangi oleh Will Smith sebagai Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman sebagai Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie sebagai Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney sebagai Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne sebagai Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara sebagai Katana, Adewale Akonnuoye-Agbaje sebagai Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez sebagai El Diablo, Adam Beach sebagai Slipknot, Viola Davis sebagai Amanda Waller, dan Jared Leto sebagai Joker. Selain mereka ada juga peran misterius yang akan diperankan oleh Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack dan Common. Film ini akan dirilis pada 5 Agustus 2016.
